LimeWire 5.5 is Here!

We’ve been working hard on improving some of the core experiences in LimeWire this release, and we are excited to be launching them today as part of LimeWire 5.5. First and foremost, we continue to arm ourselves (and our users) in our ongoing fight against viruses and spam on the Gnutella network. As part of that effort, we are very excited to be able to offer our PRO users the added protection of AVG’s anti-virus solution as a fully integrated component of LimeWire PRO 5.5 (for Windows). After each file is downloaded, it will be scanned for viruses and automatically delete any infected file that came in through LimeWire before it can be launched or shared - thereby reducing the potential for virus propagation across the entire network. While we are currently only offering the AVG solution only to our PRO users, we continue to invest significant resources to kill spam and viruses for everyone on the network. This includes ongoing improvements to:
- Adaptive Spam Filter - that is trained by both users highlighting malicious files as well as being informed the files caught by AVG
- Blacklists - these lists are regularly updated to remove known offenders and known spam files from search results
- Dangerous File Checker - a growing knowledge base that looks for commonly tried tricks of embedding malicious filetypes into commonly known filetypes
Speaking of PRO, we have also totally revamped the way that users upgrade to LimeWire PRO. Instead of redownloading a different build of LimeWire, we now have an easy license key mechanism that enables user to just simply “turn on” PRO features. This will also let us offer users free trials, as well as other flexible PRO offerings that some of you have been asking for.LimeWire 5.5 also includes some new features to the LimeWire Toolbar that we recently launched, a new start page experience that is focused on more quickly getting you to the search results you are looking for, as well as a large number of bug fixes (most notably to the media player and torrent features).
