Long Tailing it Tonight
By nathan | July 12, 2006
Many of us at Lime Wire are going to Chris Anderson’s release party for his book The Long Tail down the street from us tonight.
Personally, I was a little disappointed with the book: it ignored important cultural implications of our developing long tail society, and it at times seemed simply to be a plug for Rhapsody and Amazon - two companies that are less than thrilling, even when it comes to long tail economics.
Nevertheless we will report back tomorrow - certainly with pictures, possibly with video. It promises to be interesting, but a good time at the very least.

Does it expand much on the Wired article? (In other words: did it need to be a book?)

It does expand on it, but simply by fleshing out what he wrote originally. There are a lot of examples and it’s written in a very charming style. I guess I was hoping that he’d go beyond what the article said in more significant ways.

See you at the party tonight, Lime Wire folks! I blog a bit about the social implications, and why they inherently assure the continued existence of “the hit” in my blog. I put that blog URL on my name, but check out the rest of the site too–especially the demo. Hits unify us as a culture and give us common currency (water cooler talk). Long tail consumerism isolates us, giving us “vicarious” community through the Internet. It’s a whole different thing. Anyway, I believe in the long tail enough to have developed HitTail. See you tonight!
