LimeWire 5 Alpha is released
By meverett | December 11, 2008
Our blog has been a bit quiet as of late. I see our last blog post was nearly 5 months ago. For those of you who haven’t heard in the news, we’ve been busy overhauling the User Interface and adding a bunch of new features. This week we released an Alpha to the public.
To give a quick overview, the User Interface has been completely rewritten and hopefully is a lot easier to use. The UI is still written in Swing and targets Java 6. We’re using SwingX components, Glazed Lists, SwingX painters, MigLayout, XULRunner, and a few things I’ve probably forgotten about. Also, we’ve kept the core old features and hopefully made them even better and easier to use as well as add in a bunch of new features.
The biggest new feature is the integration of Jabber. This lets you chat and share files individually with friends on your Jabber account.
As things start to slow down here on the development side of things, we’ll have lots to talk about so keep an eye out.
Let us know what you think.

I Like it..Its totally different & feels different…The old interface always ate up a lot of memory & had many viruses running around downloads that you had to constantly be aware of…
Alpha on the other hand looks very much like the Miro platform for videos…Its much sleeker & once you get use to it very easy to use…It has the look of a web page & allows you to control the features easier…Limewire Alpha is going Social…with tools to share your interest with friends & even chat which I’m sure is going to improve…
People are definitely going to love it if LW cleans up the virus problems that plagued the classic LW…the videos which always seemed to find
cheap poon…
Why doesn’t video support flv videos…
It seems everytime you open LW it has to reload the library which I believe Miro did as well which it does pretty fast but shouldn’t it remember what it read the first time….

Your elimination of file sizes has made your program extremely riskyt and from my point of view…unuseable. I will not download files that are obviouslu adware or viruses…but without the file sizes to identify thre frauds…bye bye

I think the layout is great and the friends addition is welcome. However, I was wondering why the software catagory for searching is no longer available? It is easier to search for shareware in one place as oppose to searching the net.

You can still search for programs/software. Its disabled by default. To enable the searching go to Options –> Security –> UnSafe Categories.
