Facebook Relationship Status: It’s Complicated
By jherskowitz | September 10, 2009
Dear Friends -
Recently we rolled out a great feature in LimeWire 5.2 that let you guys easily share files with your Facebook friends using LimeWire. This feature has been very positively received and we have been working on building out that feature and extending it to users of other social
networks as well. Shortly after launching the Facebook integration in LimeWire 5.2 (for Windows), Facebook requested a number of changes to the way we integrated with their platform. We very quickly responded to each of those changes and have been looking forward to working with them on deeper integrations that enable even more compelling file-sharing scenarios with your friends.
Unfortunately, this week we were contacted again… this time not with a change request, but with a notice that they were going to disable the feature. Rather than leave you with a broken LimeWire, we decided to disable the feature before they did so. As an avid user of both Facebook and LimeWire myself, I am as disappointed by this as anyone. It is unfortunate for us all, particularly considering that LimeWire and Facebook share the common vision of being “a place to connect and share”.
We hope to find a way to work with Facebook to re-enable the features that you guys continue to ask for and we sincerely apologize for having to remove this feature in the near-term. In the meantime, you can still directly share with your Google Talk, Live Journal and Jabber friends, and we look forward to working with a number of other open platforms and social networks to continue bringing you the social sharing features you desire.
Sincerely,
Jason Herskowitz
Vice President - Product Management

Any chance of attempting the feature with myspace? I understand that there’s still the possibility that the feature may be reconnected with facebook, but I love myspace, too…

I do hope Facebook changes its direction of proprietary functionality without the enthusiastic fans Limewire. There have been many companies in the past that went that direction and later regretted it. Walls and conflict are not good. Let the two entities of Limewire and Facebook come back to the board table and work out what needs to be worked out…please. Move ahead and move forward for all in a positive direction. And then grow and celebrate. . . .

The sole reason I downloaded the update!!! I’ve been looking forward to this feature for years before it was introduced. Now if only all my friends upgrade to the latest version and Facebook decides to stop acting like Apple with its App store!!
In the meanwhile though, Limewire, you should stop advertising Facebook integration as one of your primary features in the older versions of Limewire. My limewire 5.0 showed the ad at startup, which included Facebook integration as one of the new features.
